7 Reasons You Should Start Blogging

Today, millions of people blog. This has caused many, including myself, to wonder if blogging is too saturated? Are too many people blogging already?  If I start a blog, will anyone read it? The answer might surprise you. Yes, there are millions with a blog. In fact more people blog today than ever before; however, this should not stop you. Why? Because the answer to the next question (Will anyone read my blog?) is a resounding “yes.” Well…at least a good hearty “maybe.” All depending on how seriously you decide to take your blog. So…why should you start blogging? Here are my 7 reasons.

1: Tell Your Story

We all have a story to tell. You are no different. Each person is unique. Each person has faced different struggles and have found different answers. I for one love to hear people’s stories, especially when the story is one of faith. If you’re a Christian, you have a testimony. A testimony is simply the story of all Christ has done in your life. A testimony should never be wasted, downplayed, or dismissed. Each one is unique and wonderful. A blog will give you a platform to tell your story. Which leads me to reason number 2, with a blog you can help people.

2: Help People

When people have questions…they google. If you’re knowledgeable and have a blog on a topic, you get help everyone who goes searching for an answer. For example, if you’ve been wondering if you should start a blog…this article is here to help you. Blogs can be on every topic imaginable. Do you love thrift stores? Why not start a blog teaching people how to spot a good deal…while displaying some of the treasures you yourself find? Are you and your spouse passionate about helping other married people win at marriage? Start a blog devoted to helping married couples. Are you quite the woodsman?  Teach people how to do woodsman stuff. When you have a blog…you get to help people. If your blog is not designed to help people…ask yourself why are you blogging in the first place. Even business blogs help potential customers find solutions to their problems.

If your blog is not designed to help people…ask yourself why are you blogging in the first place.

3: Gain Confidence While Destroying Imposter Syndrome

It’s hard to put yourself out there. For a long time I dealt with Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome is where an individual doubts their accomplishments and fears being exposed a “fraud.” You might be thinking, who am I to write on this topic. Truth is, you are qualified and your opinion is important. Everyone starts somewhere. The more you write and post on a particular topic, the more confidence you’ll gain. Here’s the cool correlation. The more confidence you gain the less you’ll deal with Imposter Syndrome. Don’t focus on the fact that you’re putting yourself in the light, focus more on the fact that it’s what you need to do in order to help as many people as possible. Additionally, blogging will improve your writing and communication skills.

4: Improve Your Writing and Communication Skills

Writers write. The more you write the better you’ll get at writing. When writing, you’re forced to really think. You dive deep in your thoughts to find the right words, the right phrases, the right…pauses. Simply put, when you start blogging, you’re ability to communicate clearly increases as your skills as a writer grows. If you want to become a good writer or communicator…start a blog. It might be rocky at first, but you’re learning and will get better. You’ll find and perfect your style, and your audience will grow as a result.

5: Learn Through Writing

Blogging on topic of interest to you will immensely help you learn more about that topic. I’m passionate about Christian spirituality, leadership, productivity, and all things blogging, online marketing, etc. Therefore, by blogging on these topics I’m learning a great deal—including what works and what doesn’t work. I study and digest information for each post. The more I write, the more I learn. The same is true with you. Pick a topic you’re passionate about and just start. Don’t let Imposter Syndrome stop you. You’ll gain confidence and knowledge as you move forward. Eventually, you’ll likely even become an expert in your field.

6: Become an Expert in Your Field

Blogging is a platform. It’s a place where your voice can be heard. Over time, your tribe will gather and come to YOUR blog for YOUR guidance. If done right, your platform will grow. When this happens, you’ll start to be known as an expert in the field. As an expert with a tribe, your possibilities begin to open up tremendously. Do you want to become a speaker? Start a blog. Do you want to write a book? Start a blog. You’re tribe will grow (i.e. the people who will BUY your book) as you perfect your writing. Additionally, showing a publisher that you (1) are an expert in the field, (2) already have a large audience to market to, and (3) have developed good writing skills will help you in land that contract.

7: Earn Extra Income

Finally, starting a blog can earn you some extra income. It all starts with a blog. As your audience grows, there are numerous ways to monetize your blog to bring in extra revenue or replace your full-time job. Just a few include affiliate marketing (where you earn a commission on products you use and recommend, see my kit for an example), leasing advertising space, selling an ebook, offering an online course, having a paid membership, etc. It all starts with a blog.

  • Thanks for your insight and encouragement on writing a blog. I am somewhat new at writing a blog. I say somewhat new because I started a blog several years ago as a way to develop my writing skills. I thought, at the time, it would be a good way to improve my writing, and I still believe this. Since then, I have come to see it, not only as a way to improve my writing, but as a way to help, inspire and motivate Christians spiritually as well as non-Christians who might stumble on to it. Your posts are helping me to gain a fresh perspective on why I desire to start a blog, what my motive should be and how to prosper and grow my blog. Thanks again for your help and inspiration. God bless you!

    • I’m so glad you’re finding my blog useful! Never give up, it can be grueling at times, but blogging as amazing benefits. I pray God continues to bless you and give you inspiration.
