The Power of Post-It Notes

The typical post-it note lives its life barely hanging onto a dusty monitor as it proclaims what time you were suppose to meet your friend for lunch…last month. However, the post-it note might be the best creative tool ever created.

The post-it note is invaluable when it comes to studying, mind mapping, and outlining. Trust me, I’ve spent my fair share doing each of the three.

Studying

Use post-it notes to get the big picture of the class. In law school, I would write down each major topic in the class on a post-it note. Then I would start making a list of the smaller topics for each one. When I was finished I was able to step back and see the whole picture. After studying the smaller topics, I could then use the post-it notes to formulate how I would answer questions. For example: if the question dealt with “Note A”—then analyze these subjects.

Mind Mapping

You can use post-it notes for mind mapping. A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information. Working on a huge project or just want to brainstorm some new ideas…use post-it notes to help flesh out your ideas and see where additional information is needed. Having a wall full of post-it notes helps you see the connection between different topics. Just be careful what you’re researching or you might end up looking like a criminal mind suspect.

Outlining

Much like I did with studying, you can use post-it notes for outlining. Are you writing a book or working on a big project? Use post-it notes for the chapters or large task. This way it is easier to see how it all fits together and you have the freedom to move the note around as you change the order of chapters or task. Maybe, you can replace the yellow post-it note with a different color once the task is finished.

What other ways are you using post-it notes? Leave a comment and let me know.
