Scary Close | Book Review

Drop the act and find true intimacy! This week, we’re jumping into Donald Miller’s book…Scary Close.

Scary Close by Donald Miller is a fantastic book encouraging readers to take their masks off and connect. In this book review I share my thoughts and favorite quotes from the book.

After decades of failed relationships and painful drama, Donald Miller decided he’d had enough. So at forty years old he made a scary decision: to be himself no matter what it cost.

He is an extremely entertaining writer and speaker. I love his humor.

The Big Take Away from Scary Close

The only way to really connect with others is to be completely honest about who we really are.

Favorite Quotes

  • “Grace only sticks to our imperfections. Those who can’t accept their imperfections can’t accept grace either.”
  • “It’s a beautiful moment when somebody wakes up to this reality, when they realize God created them so other people could enjoy them, not just endure them.”
  • “God is going to reveal me as a flawed human being as fast as he can and he’s going to enjoy it because it will force me to grapple with real intimacy.”
  • “I began to wonder what life would be like if I dropped the act and began to trust that being myself would be enough to get the love I needed.”
  • “A good story makes you thankful to be alive because it reminds you that while sometimes painful, life is indeed beautiful and even magical.”
  • “Perhaps that’s another reason true intimacy is so frightening. It’s the one thing we all want, and must give up control to get.”
  • “It’s true: if we live behind a mask we can impress but we can’t connect.”

My Thoughts

I love Donald Miller’s writing style…and this book is no different. He’s poetic and humorous…yet very profound. He really makes you think about the things that matter.

Miller is extremely vulnerable in this book on intimacy and I love it.

Being a theatre major, professional magician, and now attorney… I’m able to relate to wearing a mask. I’d like to think Scary Close helped me take off the mask…at least a little.

Conclusion

If you find yourself living in fear of intimacy…this book is for you.

If you’re afraid to be yourself…this book is for you.

Finally, if you want to really connect with those around you…this book is for you.

If this book is for you…purchase Scary Close here.
